We are very excited to announce that starting this month and continuing throughout the year, Senior Safety News will be distributing FREE copies of Senior Safety Book at Bingo Halls, Senior Clubs, and Senior gatherings throughout Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. Other regions will be added later this year.

Many of the seniors that would greatly benefit from the numerous safety tips in Senior Safety Book are not on the internet. So we are distributing copies throughout the community. If you would like for us to include your senior group or event on our distribution list, then submit your request by email: SeniorSafetyNews (at) yahoo.com.

Deadly Tornadoes Devastate The Midwest – Seniors Need an Emergency Safety Plan

It has been a devastating week in the Midwest as deadly tornadoes blazed a path of destruction. Many small towns have been permanently scarred by the damage. It is at times like these that we are alarmingly reminded that having a disaster plan or at least a mini-emergency plan is critical.

Seniors and the elderly are especially vulnerable during weather related events. Seniors and caregivers for the elderly should evaluate the various “what if” scenarios that could pose life threatening situations.

What weather affects your part of the country? Whether it is floods, hurricanes, earthquakes or tornadoes – you need a plan for protection, preservation, escape, communication and alternative shelter.

Here are some resources to help you identify what you need to prepare for:

Tornadoes:
See The American Red Cross’ Report: “Stay safe with this Tornado Safety Checklist

Flooding:
See FEMA’s Report: “Flood Preparation and Safety

Hurricanes:
See the preparation tips from the National Hurricane Center

Earthquakes:
See FEMA’s Earthquake Safety Tips

Extreme Heat:
See FEMA’s Extreme Heat Guide

Extreme Cold/Winter Storm:
See Ready.gov’s Extreme Cold/Winter Storm Guide

Wildfires:
See FEMA’s Wildfire Safety Tips

The most important thing is that seniors and caregivers need to acknowledge that weather related events are naturally occurring. These events can easily and quickly create life threatening situations. Anything that you and your family can do to prepare for challenging possibilities can sometimes be the difference between life and death.

Senior Safety Tip – 5 Senior “Must Haves” for Safer Bathing

Bathrooms can be a very dangerous place for seniors. They are often the scene where many seniors experience falls that result in serious injuries.

However, bathing can be a much safer experience when some careful safety planning and preparation is in place.

These are 5 things that should be in the bathroom for a safer experience.

#1 – Safety hand rails – This will give you something to hold onto as you enter and exit the tub or shower. Not only is this critical when you step on slippery surfaces but also in case you feel lightheaded and dizzy from the heat/steam of the water.

#2 – No slip bath mat – This should be on the floor of the shower or tub to protect you from slips.

#3 – No slip floor mat – You should also have a no slip mat to step on when exiting the shower/bath too. Towels can be slippery and dangerous. Use a mat that is specifically designed for bathrooms which are moist areas. The bottom should be a non slip surface.

#4 – A shower rest seat – Even if you shower or bath while standing….have the seat ready or within arm’s reach…just in case you start to feel weak or woozy.

#5 – Have a cell phone within arm’s reach. Have a special place for your phone that protects it from getting wet but keeps it within arm’s reach just in case you become ill, or fall and need outside assistance.

There are other things you can do to protect yourself from injury while bathing:

  • Make sure your water heater is set to a maximum 120 degrees to prevent burns.
  • Clear clutter to prevent slips.
  • If possible, bathe when family members are home, in case help is needed.

Senior Safety Tip: Senior Driving Video – Transitioning Discussion for Caregivers

This is a very helpful video (from Liberty Mutual and ITN America) about the decisions that must be made as senior drivers transition to transportation assistance. This also helps caregivers to start the dialogue with their loved ones.
